Olga Valentinovna Korbut is a Belarusian gymnast who competed for the Soviet Union. She gained fame during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Nicknamed the “Sparrow from Minsk,” Korbut won four gold medals and two silver medals at the Olympics. Her performances are widely credited with redefining gymnastics, shifting the focus from ballet and elegance to acrobatics. She emigrated to the United States in 1991, where she now lives and trains gymnasts.
In 1988 Korbut became the first gymnast to be inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame
Her 1972 Olympic achievement earned her the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year and ABC's Wide World of Sports title of Athlete of the Year.
